Colors of Alaska

Alaska en route to Sitka

We just returned from an amazing trip to Alaska and Vancouver.  The photo above was taken on the first day out of Seward as we cruised towards Sitka.  This kind of scenery went on hour after hour, day after day.  For those of you who have never been, you would not believe how many miles you go seeing nothing but glorious nature.  We saw lots of wildlife including a black bear cub, humpback and killer whales, porpoises, otters, seals, eagles in great profusion, artic terns who make the longest migration in the world, and several other birds who seemed not to mind the frigid waters.

I was touched by the purity of the area and by the fortitude of those who live there year round.  Many are summer residents who come to work or to play, to study or to learn.  Without a doubt there was no one we met who did not find Alaska to be a place of pristine beauty and worthy of keeping that way.

The colors were either blue and white or green and green.  Since a lot of Alaska is a rainforest, the greenery there is stunning in its profusion and colors.  Waterfalls were everywhere….I lost count after 20.  Indeed, on the first day as we took the train to Seward from Anchorage, there was one spot with 8 waterfalls that they dubbed Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs!

Enjoy this photo….I’ll post more from the trip this week….

  1. Thanks for sharing this darling! This is the third time in a couple of weeks that Alaska is being brought to my attention, and Sitka in particular. Years ago I read anything I could get my hands on about Alaska in general and Sitka in particular. I think I’ll be doing my very first cruise next summer and it will be to Alaska.
    Glorious!

  2. You will LOVE Alaska….so much to photograph! Get a good cruise line if you go….smaller is better because you can get into the Fjords and up close to the glaciers.

    Thanks for your comment!

  3. Thanks for the tip! Will keep that in mind!
